The Beginning

Chase Christopher Wilson arrived 9 weeks early at 31 weeks 4 days gestation, weighing 3lbs 6oz and measuring 16 inches long.

Chris and I were so excited and shocked when we found out we were expecting. I remember the day vividly. It was Saturday October 4, 2007. We were having a garage sale to get rid of some of our things before moving to Missouri. I had just accepted a new job the week before at North K.C. Hospital and would be starting in January 2008. We had so much to do before moving from Cincinnati-garage sale, sell the house, move, find a new home in K.C., find a new job for Chris in K.C. But we were looking forward to transition. So after our last garage sale customer came and went, I suggested to Chris that he may want to grab a pregnancy test while out running errands as I was a couple days "late". He looked surprised and said "wouldn't that add an interesting twist to our situation?"

So after taking the test, it was official, I was pregnant! Not completely convinced, and still in shock, I took 4 more pregnancy tests over the next two days. Yep, still positive.

It's time for our 22 week ultrasound, and we get to find out the gender of our baby. We were excited to find out it's a boy. This excitement quickly turned to fear when we were told the baby's limbs were measuring more than two weeks behind schedule, and he had a flat nasal bridge, both markers for Down's Syndrome and dwarfism. I had an amniocentesis, and we would wait several weeks before all the results were back. Waiting was the hardest part! Down's Syndrome was first ruled out, then two other genetic tests, then 4 weeks later we found out the common types of dwarfism were ruled out. We were relieved, but still concerned with not knowing why the short limbs, hoping he just takes after his mother :) We were told we'd just have to wait until he was born when he could be better examined.

I had just had my first baby shower with my good college friends two days before, and we moved into our new home the next day. We just spent our first night in our new home. As I was getting ready for work, I noticed a little blood after going to the bathroom. I just thought I over did it while moving the day before, and was probably a little dehydrated. I called the doctor who said to go to the hospital to get checked out, and low and behold I'm dilated 4 cm and having contractions every 2-3 minutes. We knew this couldn't be good, but hoped for the best. I was started on a magnesium drip and wasn't allowed out of bed. I started noticing the contractions, but they slowed down to every 5-7 minutes. This went on for almost 24 hrs.

At 5:00am, the contractions, which had turned to pressure by this point, where pretty strong. I told the nurse, who checked me, and then said "you better call and wake up your husband, and I'll call the doctor. The baby is right there." As soon as Chris walked in the door, my water broke. The doctor arrived just in time, and Chase was born at 6:06am. He made a couple little cries, and was then taken to the NICU.
