Chase continues to slowly make progress, which is all we can hope for. His feeding status is the biggest obstacle at this point. They increased his feeds slightly to 51 mls and run it through the NG over 30 minutes every three hours. He tolerated it perfect from his 2 o'clock feeding on, but unfortunately lost his lunch at 11am when OT was there to work with him. So OT wasn't able to make much progress with the oral feeding trial. I have a good feeling tomorrow he'll surprise us all though! We met with the resident and discussed all the different feeding options and the different types of feeding tubes. It sounds like they want to continue to evaluate him over the next couple weeks to see if he makes progress, and then determine what type of feeds he'll need. It would be a little risky if he were to go home with an NG tube b/c it can slip out or be pulled out easily, so the safest option if he still needs tube feeds in two weeks is the gastric tube. This requires another surgery but would allow him to be fed directly into his stomach without fear of the tube slipping out. With the surgery comes risk of infection, and he would have to be back on the ventilaor for a while after the surgery. Everything else seems on track. His chest x-ray and labs today looked good. He gained 5 grams. He gets another eye exam tomorrow. And we're getting closer and closer to bringing him home! We can't wait for him to come home, but the thought of taking care of him on our own is somewhat unnerving to say the least. The social workers are trying to get private duty nursing set up, at least initially, so that should help. God's amazing grace will continue to get us through, no doubt!
From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. John 1:16
