Better Day

Chase had a better day today. Several interventions were made. He had another blood transfusion, and was started on two strong antibiotics (vancomycin and cefotaxime - for my pharmacy friends and those interested) :) So besides his white count being slightly elevated (10.7), the preliminary microbiology report showed staph aureus from the trach aspirate. The blood culture is still pending, but we're really hoping he doesn't have an infection in his blood!! Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in over the next couple days and he'll start getting better!! The poor little guy tries to cough and cry, and nothing comes out, not even a peep because of the trach, just a grimace. You can tell he just wants all of these tubes and electrodes gone. I got him to suck on his purple pacifier for a while this afternoon, he really liked that. He has a hard time getting his thumb up to his mouth now with the trach, but I'm sure he'll eventually figure it out. They are changing out the trach tomorrow and getting him a new fresh one. I think that will make him feel better.

Hi guys,

Just got off the phone with Chris and he sent me the blog link. It is great to finally see Chase, what a cute little guy, and SO MUCH HAIR! Sorry to hear that the last few days have been rough. Seeing your pictures and your struggles takes Debbie and I back to the months that the boys were in the NICU. We too spent a lot of time questioning our decisions. Please know that the decisions you make are always in Chase's best interest because that is the only way that you actually get to those decisions at all. We think of you everyday and are praying for you and your family. If you need anything, even just to talk, please don't hesitate to call, ANYTIME. Thanks for the blog, we will be checking it frequently and thinking of you often. With Love, The McFarland's

Almost 6 pounds! That is progress in itself, Katie -- and such an encouraging sign that Chase is thriving despite everything else that seems discouraging. I'm glad today was better, and I pray you have lots more of those ahead. We love you -
