Loving to be held

I was able to hold Chase for the first time since his trach surgery. I'm not sure who enjoyed it more, him or me. But it was definitely the highlight of my day. He was a little squirmy after they changed his trach, but it seemed as soon as they put him in my arms, he settled right in and looked so peaceful. I held him for several hours. I was so lost in the moment that I kind of forgot about pumping, but luckily realized it before it turned embarassing :) I still didn't want to put him back though. His respiratory status is about the same, still on the vent, but he's breathing over the vent, which is a good thing. He's getting breathing treatments to help open his lungs. Hopefully they'll try weaning him off the vent soon. The cranio-facial/plastic surgeon stopped by and said there really wasn't anything that could be done yet from his perspective. He said he usually doesn't like operating on kids less than 4 yrs old due to the effect it can have on the growth of the bone. But if Chase's nasal passage hasn't grown enough, or he hasn't learned how to breathe from his mouth, then reconstructive surgery might be the next option down the road.

Katie and Chase -
Chris has kept me somewhat up to date via email about Chase, and I'm glad he sent me the link to the blog so I can monitor your journey. My thoughts and prayers are with both of you - you and Chris will make the best parents of anyone I know when Chase comes home!

I miss you all, and I'll miss seeing you this summer in Cincinnati.

Here's to more good days and more hours of holding Chase =)

Love,
Karen
