Back on the surgery schedule

After much debate, we decided to go along with the surgery (g-tube and fundo). We were able to get him to take 85% of his feedings by bottle over the last 24 hours, but it was alot of work! And he still has alot of emesis which often requires trach care and cleaning, and puts him a greater risk for aspiration. So we spoke in depth with the doctor and he brought up some good points. Our insurance denied our claim for the fourth time for in home nursing, and the doctor asked if we alone could work this hard day in and day out to get Chase to eat. Over the last 24 hours we realized how stressful and frustrating it can be when he doesn't take the bottle. I think we'd go crazy. As he gains weight, he is going to require more volume, which he can't handle. If he were to aspirate, it could mean serious problems and more hospital stays. And we are so finished with hospital stays! We could hold off another week and see what happens, or he can get the surgery tomorrow, recover in about a week, and come home. It seems to be the safest and best option for Chase at this point. It pains me to think of him having to go through more surgery after all he's already been through. I hope we're making the right decision. Please keep Chase in your prayers tomorrow. And thank you thank you for all your prayers and support thus far!!!

I think you've made the right decision. You really did give him the chance he needed to try all oral feedings and he let you know that he needs a little more time. I will say lots of extra prayers tomorrow!

Katie,
I got the link to this blog from Pam Gray through my mother, and have read through it in my spare moments today. I just want to tell you that my thoughts and prayers are with your family. I am sorry that you, Chris and especially Chase have had these trials and tribulations. But I know that God gave the gifts of patience, strength of heart and character, the gift of kindness, of dertermination and the gift of love that will get you through this. Your faith and uplifted spirit is incredible. You were someone I always guessed would do great things, and you are doing that and more as Chase's mommy. I can see that with the love of you, your husband and all of your friends and family you have willed your strength into that beautiful little boy and have helped him flourish. You can see it in his eyes that he feels loved. Not many people in this world could do all that you two have and are doing, and Chase is so blessed that God gave you to him as parents. Once again I wish the Wilson family all the best. I will be thinking and praying for each you.
